Women's March (2009)

THE PLATFORM of island-wide teachers, ‘United Cyprus’, is organising a Bicommunal March for Truth and Hope this Saturday, raising awareness on the issues of historical truth, missing persons and women’s role in the struggle for peace. According to a statement released by the platform of Greek and Turkish Cypriot teachers, educators and intellectuals are responsible for seeking, promoting and defending historical truth and not distorting it.    Read all.

 

Cyprus must be demilitarized (2005)
We are Cypriot women of different ethnic, cultural, political and social backgrounds. In 2001 we joined together to form "Hands Across the Divide". We struggle, despite all odds, to reunify our country so that the real problems of our communities, our youth, and our women can be solved. Too much time and energy has been spent over the last 40 years on the Cyprus problem, which has become a catchall and a mask overshadowing the real problems and concerns of the Cypriot people.   Read all.

Peace groups plan bottle mountain outside Denktash's house

GREEK Cypriot peace groups said yesterday they would help their Turkish Cypriot counterparts to build a 'message in a bottle' mountain outside the residence of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to press home their demand for reunification of the island based on the UN plan. The bicommunal women's group 'Hands Across the Divide' and other peace groups launched their campaign in Nicosia's main square in support of the Turkish Cypriots by collecting signatures for a petition and written messages for the bottles. Bi-communal NGO takes a stand

GREEK Cypriot members of the bi-communal women's group Hands Across the Divide gathered in Nicosia's Eleftheria Square yesterday to show their solidarity with Turkish Cypriots and promote an end to the island's division. The group said activities to promote solidarity will continue until February 28, the deadline for the acceptance of the Annan plan by both sides.    Read all.

 
STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY WITH WOMEN OF THE JERUSALEM LINK.
We, as concerned women and men of Cyprus, wish to extend our friendship and solidarity to the people of Palestine and Israel and our sympathy to all families who have suffered bereavement and loss in the current Israeli-Palestinian cycle of violence.
We call on regional and world leaders, especially of the USA and the European Union, to acknowledge their responsibilities and exert pressure on the Israeli authorities to put an immediate end to the Israeli occupation of Arab land and for the creation of an independent Palestinian state.    Read all.
 
 
Welcome, Mr Denktash
RAUF Denktash made history last night when he crossed the Green Line for the first time since the island was divided 27 years ago to dine at the residence of President Glafcos Clerides. The Turkish Cypriot leader entered the free areas through Nicosia Airport in the UN-controlled buffer zone, instead by the Ledra Palace checkpoint as expected. Police patrols were present at different spots on the dividing line to ensure Denktash's route remained a secret, CyBC reported.   Read all.
