European Civic Service: A Common AMICUS
March 2009 - December 2009
The aim of the AMICUS project, funded by the European Commission, was the location of a model of European civil Service through the comparison of the experiences of civil Service in the involved countries: France, Germany, Spain, Poland and Cyprus. These countries are particularly interesting from the point of view of the Civil Service: in Germany, France and also Italy, considering the role that have played in the process of European integration, the experiences of civil Service and voluntary Service are a more radical reality. Poland and Cyprus are, instead, countries where the experiences of civil Service and voluntary Service are more recent, but not less interesting in the light of their history and their young integration in the European Union.
Hands Across the Divide was one of the partner organisations of the Italian National Office for Civil Service (Ufficio Nazionale per il Servizio Civile). Two young Italian women came to Cyprus for six months and volunteered with Hands Across the Divide, while conducting their research on the Cypriot volunteerism sector and the condition of conscientious objectors on the island.
